Stream Team: Not Up to Parra

Looking to cycle spot-starters each day? Check out the Stream Team, where we tab pitchers that are likely to help you in your quest for fantasy gold.

We weren't able to secure a win in yesterday's Mike Pelfrey spot start, but the Mets pitcher turned in a great outing nonetheless, going 7.2 innings while striking out five and allowing two runs. We've now made 31 post-All Star Break starts, picking up 14 wins and posting a 3.64 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 161 Ks in 187.2 innings pitched.

For comparison's sake, Carlos Zambrano also had 14 wins in 2008, throwing 188.2 innings while striking out 130 batters and turning in a 3.91 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. In a month, we've managed to exceed Zambrano's entire 2008 season.

Tomorrow's pick is someone who we also spot-started in his last start, where Manny Parra was shelled in 5.2 innings, giving up six runs on 13 hits and two walks while giving us a very lucky win. With a 6.44 ERA and 1.84 WHIP, it's easy to see why Parra is unowned in most leagues. The only reason I like him tomorrow is because he's facing an ice-cold Pirates team.

Pittsburgh has scored four runs in their last four games combined, and two of those were in Colorado, where offenses generally thrive. The team has a .600 OPS in the past week, which is the worst in the majors over that period of time. It's a good idea to pick against an offense while they are down, so even though Parra hasn't been good for the ratios this season, I think he'll put up a quality start against this putrid team.

Remember, he does have wins in five of his last six games, showing that he pitches for a team with a great offense that gives him an opportunity to win even without his best stuff. If wins and strikeouts are your target, Parra is your man. If you're more concerned with ratios, consider Homer Bailey at home. He won't get a win going up against Tim Lincecum, but he should do well against a bad Giants offense.
